In the year 2042, an unlicensed pregnancy is a felony, punishable by prison and confiscation of the child. Willa grew up in the Children’s Center overseen by the ruthless Bureau of Population Management. She escaped from the Center at sixteen, only to find herself homeless and pregnant. By grit and luck she survived, but now her daughter Katy has been seized by the same arrogant arm of the state. Unless Willa can rescue her, she faces a life of stigma, toil, and despair. But Willa has won the support of some unlikely allies. Together they devise an audacious scheme that will enable her to hide in plain sight and to rescue Katy – but only if she can find the courage to reinvent herself. When no one is what they seem, the truth can be a dangerous luxury. Book Two of the Children in Hiding trilogy is a dystopian thriller that tests whether love can outwit bureaucratic greed, and whether Willa can tread a treacherous path between reality and illusion.

Come on Home Children Children in Hiding Volume 2 Victoria Randall 9781500186036 Books Reviews
Unlike the first book in the series, this has a slower pacing and is less suspenseful though just as intense and exciting. Moreover, the plot is a little more extreme while the romance part gives the book an entirely different appeal to readers, especially to those who enjoy a bit of heart-tickling scenes.
The characterization is great with the main protagonist, Willa, portrayed as a tough and strong woman and a patient and loving mother while her daughter Katy is a very smart and a very brave girl. The minor characters, which are given short but enough descriptions for backstories, each plays an important role. Casually worded throughout the entire story, the book is easy to read and understand.
Needless to say, I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the first one.
Shortly after she turned 16, Willa escaped from the Renton Children’s Center where she’d been confined since birth. Willa had been one of the unlicensed kids confiscated by the state to be raised as a laborer.
Four years later, now the mother of a 3-year-old unlicensed kid herself – Katy, who at 3 is wise beyond her years – Willa meets Thomas Sawyer, a computer genius and CEO who is one of the richest men in Seattle, who she saves from a mugging.
Willa’s life takes a drastic turn when it intersects with Julia Amberton, director of a children’s center, who is motivated by greed, and who uses the Bureau of Population Management to take custody of Katy.
Come on home, Children by Victoria Randall is the second in the Children in Hiding series, which tells the story of a country gone off the rails as the effects of well-meaning, but ultimately wrong-headed legislation leads to what amounts to a police state, where reproductive rights are restricted to only the very rich, and freedom is nonexistent.
Randall paints a grim picture of what can happen when politics and greed merge and the rights of people get mangled in the process. You find yourself identifying with and rooting for the characters, especially Willa and Katy, who just want to live their lives without government interference. Ordinarily the villains in a story should have some positive traits, but in this case, Amberton is ‘bad to the bone,’ but that’s believable considering the circumstances, and readers will find themselves wishing fervently for her downfall.
This novel is intense, covering a socially relevant topic in an entertaining way without sermonizing. It is also uplifting as it shows that sometimes those with resources are good people, and when good people decide not to stand idly by, justice can be served.
This is a good follow on to Get on Board Little Children, with a new cast of characters operating in the world created in that book. I give it a solid five stars.
Willa escapes from the Renton Children’s Center when she is sixteen years old. Four years later she has a young daughter and she is attending college with a fake ID, trying to earn her degree in nursing. She never would have survived it weren’t for her friend Adele, an older woman who allowed Willa and her daughter Katy to live with her in the underground labyrinth beneath the Pike Place Market. But when the Bureau of Population Management arrives on Adele’s doorstep, the fake birth certificate for Katy doesn’t work and Katy is dragged off to the Renton Children’s Home as an illegal child, just as Willa had been twenty years earlier.
Willa is a heartwarming character, determined to make a life for her and her small daughter. She works hard and is a very loving mother. When Katy is taken from her, she is determined to get her back. Thankfully, she has friends, new and old, poor and wealthy, who band together to help her. But will all the help be enough? In the end, it is Willa who has to become someone new, to put on a different front, to legitimize herself so that she can rescue Katy.
I liked Willa and found her to be very believable. I also liked her friend Jake Reed, a double amputee from the war in Afghanistan thirty years ago, who watches over and protects Willa. The plot is well crafted and the pacing is good. The suspense builds throughout and it isn’t until the very end that things are resolved. I enjoyed the descriptions of Seattle, similar to today’s city, and yet definitely changed. The setting definitely enhanced the plot.
This is the second novel in a series, but it works just fine as a standalone. I have not read the first novel in the series, but I was instantly hooked by this story and did not feel as if I’d missed anything.
Readers of dystopian science fiction are sure to enjoy this exciting, heartfelt story.
