Honestly there isn't much more that I can add that the other 5 star reviews did not already hit on that perfectly describe this novel. Its simply fantastic.I first read this novel when i was probably a freshmen in highschool (26 now) and fell in love with it. i would read it every few months just because it was great. I let my niece borrow my copy a few years back and she lost it so I bought the Ebook for my kindle I just finished re reading this for the first time in probably 6+ years and i fell in love with it again. Its is a simply written but completely addictive book. I am tempted to re read it again just to get pulled into it again. its one of my favorite books by far. as for the Ebook copy... it has some typos in it EEK but the story is still amazing. I'm planning on buying the Hardback copy. i wish they would have made this into a movie instead! would have had more rational teens girls come out of that theater that's for sure.Tags : Amazon.com: Companions of the Night (9780152166694): Vivian Vande Velde: Books,Vivian Vande Velde,Companions of the Night,Magic Carpet Books,0152166696,Fantasy - General,Horror,Fantasy,Vampires,Vampires;Fiction.,Children's Teenage fiction & true stories,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Fiction,General,JUVENILE,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Fiction Fantasy & Magic,Juvenile Fiction General,Juvenile Fiction Horror & Ghost Stories,Juvenile Grades 7-9 Ages 12-14,United States,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Fantasy General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Horror,Young Adult FictionFantasy - General, young adult fantasy; romantic horror; vampire story; mysterious boy on the run; falling for a vampire; falsely accused of being undead; cat-and-mouse game; seduced by evil; vigilante hunters; blood-curdling thriller; brutality; revenge; violence; thriller; fast paced; edge of your seat; crime; detectives; page turner; engaging; lively; against the odds; noir; mystery; drama, young adult fantasy;romantic horror;vampire story;mysterious boy on the run;falling for a vampire;falsely accused of being undead;cat-and-mouse game;seduced by evil;vigilante hunters;blood-curdling thriller;brutality;revenge;violence;thriller;fast paced;edge of your seat;crime;detectives;page turner;engaging;lively;against the odds;noir;mystery;drama,General,Juvenile Fiction Fantasy & Magic,Juvenile Fiction General,Juvenile Fiction Horror & Ghost Stories,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Fantasy General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Horror,Young Adult FictionFantasy - General,Fiction,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Children's Teenage fiction & true stories
Companions of the Night Vivian Vande Velde Books Reviews
I didn't realize this book was intended for a young reader when I started it. The dialogue was choppy and didn't flow well. The story was frustrating because it went no where. Nothing developed...the end.
Intense reader right here. I get bored of the same old ideas being rehashed in books.
That being said I loved the unique setting of a laundromat in here. Who does that? Maybe more people but nothing I've read lately. Original ideas really make me respect a piece of work and this one got my respect.
I read this book for the first time in the sixth grade and thought it was amazing. I have ever since been trying to find it again so that I could own it and now that I do ... I never put it down I'm completely enamored by this book and the characters in it. They are such a believable coupling and I wouldn't have had it any other way. And the fact that it is a single book and not a series is both a pleasant and annoying. I'm happy it is just one book because it makes you savor the book and really appreciate it rather than rush off to the next one, but at the same time wish there were a bit more after. Even if just only at epilogue to see the future.
But I believe that is part of the books charm is that it keeps your mind alive with the possibilities of the unwritten. Rather than dragging it out into bothersome drawl of writing rather than a intricate story of depth. But I do recommend this book to anyone with a wailing heart for accidental love, classic vampires, and a blurring line of right and wrong. This book jump started my reading career and I am forever grateful for it.
I first read this book as a teen years ago and have reread it several times since. I still enjoy it just as much as I did that first time.
I purchased this book on a recommendation I read online that indicated it was similar to Twilight. Although there is a vampire and a young girl, it never gets into a romantic setting. I did like the gist of the story line and the old myths of vampires but it just disappointed me as I was looking for a storyline along the lines of everlasting love between the characters.
A dear friend of mine told me that this book has been an all time favorite for her even though she's not the biggest fan of the vampire genre. So for I bought it for Christmas and it was not until January that I decided to start reading it.
When I finished reading the book even though the plot was very interesting it didn't satisfied my readers appetite, I thought when I was done I was just done and it didn't left that feeling that I've read an amazing story. But don't get me wrong the plot is good, has a lot of suspense and action but I must warned you if you are looking for romance or a love story aka Bella & Edward then this novel is not for you.
What I did like about the book is that Vivian creates a strong lead female. Kerry was a doer. She wasn't a damsel in distress, all the contraire she was the one trying to do the saving and she even get to do it several times in the book. She's very strong headed but you see her vulnerability because she's worried about her dad and her little brother and it affects her more their disappearance because her mother left them without a word and the fact of loosing her family makes her more determine to find them alive and though she know she's doing a bargain with a Vampire and that may even cost her life she's willing to sacrifice her life for her family.
About Ethan, I'm not sure if I liked him or hate him. Since he didn't trust a human with the knowledge of the existence of vampires so I believe he never trusted her fully not until the end but in the rest of the book he was cold and sarcastic but sometimes he was very nice to her so it was a bit confusing at times maybe it was self preservation thing.
The antagonist of the story is revealed almost at the end of the book at first that person tricks you to think that he's the victim of all this situation but slowly he reveals his real purpose and what is his end game and his reasoning for doing so is so evil it was almost you were dealing with psicopath and Vivian does a wonderful job describing the character.
The final scene of the story wasn't all that I really expected more because in this moments Kerry & Ethan understand their feeling for each others but what's funny for me is that I don't understand in which part of the book they felt in love *sighs* like I said, the love part is a secondary plot and is really not important.
I hope this review would help you and like I said if you are looking forward on reading suspense and action young adult book, this is the one, it has good characters, very well written plot but believe there's no romance here so if you are looking for that this may not be the book.
I first read this book back when I was a pre-teen, and it remained to be a favorite! It is perhaps the book I have re-read the most number of times. I even recommended the book to friends back then, and let them borrow mine. And they all returned to me with great feedback. Now I am 30+ years old, and decided to purchase this for my and read it again. I finished it in a day because I couldn't put it down - even though I still remember the story. It is so good! I can picture everything so vividly like a movie. And I am absolutely in love with Ethan and Kerry.
When I read Twilight years after my first encounter with this book, I was honestly a little disappointed. For a young vampire novel, "Companions of the Night" wins my heart. The interactions and romance here is also more believable, not overly sugared. It's a great mix of suspense, action, thrill and young emotions.
Honestly there isn't much more that I can add that the other 5 star reviews did not already hit on that perfectly describe this novel.
