I loved this book. The Duke was quite the hero and I loved Jane. Her Aunt was horrible and I wished I would have seen her get her just desserts. I wanted to see her suffer. She was evil and treated Jane like a slave for 12 long years. She stood up to the Duke and was very strong willed. I definitely can't wait to read more about the St Claire family. Meh. This was not an exceptional book and will doubtful stay on my "to-read" list. It wasn't bad, I was able to read it without too much effort but that might be the issue. There is nothing very memorable about this title.
It follows the typical historical romance theme where he (in this case, Hawk St. Clair), does not want to marry...ever...and the heroine (Jane Smith) falls for the rogue. Eventually he does realize he's in love with her. Basic and simple story line. However, it's too basic. No serious intrigue, no danger, no mystery. The author tries to get a little of all that with Jane's previous guardians accusing her of theft of jewels, but that whole story line is downplayed and then there is no conclusion or closure with it. I would have liked to see Hawk and Jane confront her previous guardians and seen some altercations and verbal sparring there, but its glossed over and becomes a side-thought.
The only really good thing about this book is that I didn't know who her real father was going to turn out to be, so that was interesting...but that was about the only part I was really engrossed in.
There was too much of 'I hate you/I love you' going on in this title, they went back and forth a little too much and most of the book was comprised of this rather than other scenarios or any danger, intrigue, etc etc.
It's okay for a quick read, but its just not memorable.

A cute but tad paint-by-the-numbers Regency Cinderella, foundling story.
The H and h meet at a house party where she is the drudge relative of a shallow, spiteful woman and her equally awful daughter. Because she is so much more attractive and downtrodden than dear daughter she's kicked out of the house.
She basically lifts a ride from the Duke and ends up as his quaisi-ward/companion to his sister. A family backstory is resolved as the Duke and the heroine fight their feelings. Quite improper behavior ensues.
I'm giving this a low 3 rating as some of the dialogue between the H and h was just a little too arch and cutesy for me. Mortimer tried just a tad too hard, but overall enjoyable.
I would have given this a hard 3 if the comeuppance for the evil woman had been on page rather than off although hurray for the Duke who hunts the evil monster down to have it out with her even if we don't get to read it.
It had been some time, since I read a historical romance- but not since Barbara Cartland times have I enjoyed a book more. Jane actually had a backbone something you don't see often in the new romance novels. The Duke "Hawk" was wonderful, but he was no match for Jane's temper- she was just not a simpering miss. I recommend this book highly.
I love Carole Mortimer books and this book her first Regency is excellent. Jane is a great heroine, not a wimp. Hawk is an arrogant hero. They both play off of each other in an entertaining way. They meet at her guardian's home and when she gets kicked out she sneaks into his carriage. He takes her home where she meets her unknown father. I can hardly wait till the next book, Hawk's brother's story. Jane's father was an appealing character and I wish he would get his own story he deserves a happy ending besides finding his unknown daughter.
did not like this story
I have enjoyed reading this excellent book and I think this book is much better than others. My big recommendation for reading this book.
I hated everything about this book. The repeated chapters, the repeated words, the lack of character description, no passion, nothing, Jane's silliness to the point of disliking her, and ffs; the typos! It gets 2 stars because it started off ok. I have really enjoyed all the other CM novels.
