The Show Northwest Passage Book 3 edition by John A Heldt Romance eBooks

The Show is my least favorite of Heldt's books, but still a very worthy tale and a good read, and another very 'sweet' tale of high minded very moral people.

Note-it steps right in where The Mine leaves off, so I would definitely say- read The Mine first.

Joel and Grace have married and started a life together including having two little girls. Then they go to a movie where Grace time travels back to 1918. Like Joel in The Mine she very quickly adapts to her new surroundings and settles in with a family that includes an Uncle of hers. In typical Heldt style the girl who will become her mother( in another life) arrives from England along with her sister and so the family dynamics get a little complicated as Grace learns to relate to her future mom as as teenager. Oh yeah, and Grace is pregnant with Joel's child in a time when nice girls just did not do that! Talk about complicated family dynamics!

Now we come to the part that cost this one a star. Grace meets a neighbor and in the space of a few weeks begins a relationship with him as she realizes her chances of returning to 2002 are nil. Sort of a 'girl's got to do what a girl's go to do' scenario??? Un-hunh. I ain't buying it. You're telling me a woman as intelligent as as sensitive and as committed to Joel, as Heldt writes Grace, is going to move on to another intense relationship in the space of a few weeks. Nope, never going to happen. Grace would be an emotional wreck, nearly catatonic with remorse as she mourns the loss of her two daughters and the man she so desperately loves. I am not saying it would never happen, I'm just saying the time compression for this relationship is too unrealistic for me.

A comment on characterization. The characters walk off the page very easily- meaning you can identify with them when you were at that point in your life. The strength of this aspect of the book is that you continue to think about them after you've finished their story. Something that writers rarely accomplish.

I've used the word 'sweet' to describe this tale. Let me elaborate a bit so you won't run for the exit. This book approaches love from an idealistic vantage point, perhaps somewhat representing mid-twentieth century values, but in a way where people don't just jump into bed for physical fulfillment. That's what i mean. So there aren't any graphic sex scenes depicted. Relationships are explored and evaluated for long term potential before taking a carnal step. Sweet may not be the word, but it's what occurred to me.

It gets a little hectic at the end, but reaches a satisfying conclusion. I bought the next book in the series as I an still enjoying Heldt's style.

The Show Northwest Passage Book 3 edition by John A Heldt Romance eBooks Reviews

What do they all have in common, popcorn, potato chips and John Heldt time-travel novels? To quote an old friend, "they're ever so 'more-ish'." As soon as you finish, you want more.

So I launched from _The Mine_ straight into _The Show_, and learned not only how Grace managed to stay with Joel and travel from 1941 to 2000. She also must cope with her own diversion in time, when the now-mother of twins and happy wife of Joel Smith walks into the restroom of a newly-rebuilt theater in 2002 and emerges - alone - in 1918 Seattle.

For Grace, the need to return to 2002 is urgent. She knows the theater in which the time portal rests will be completely destroyed by fire in a few short months. If she cannot find the combination that triggers the portal before then, she'll be stuck in 1918. I also found fascinating the woman's different handling of her bleak knowledge of the future. Unlike her husband when he traveled to the past, Grace finds reason to inform those she knows will suffer in the coming months.

And it appears that there are time portals all over the northwest, because I have just started reading the third in the series, _The Journey_, in which a trip down a dark staircase in 2010 ends in a chance for a woman in her late forties to revisit the world of her adolescence.

I sincerely hope there will still be more to come - popcorn, potato chips and John Heldt time-travel novels!

I have read all John Heldt’s Northwest Passage “Time Travel” stories. Rather than provide a synopsis on each and every one, I’m instead going to simply state my assessment of these novels as a whole and include it as a review on each one of the of the series.

Every story is about traveling into the past and setting the stage for the future. If you like time-travel, you’ll love this series. If I had to pick my favorite, for now I think “The Journey” would be it, but that’s just me.

Every story is a stand-alone novel. Occasionally there will be a subtle reference to one of the other novels, but that too is sufficiently explained to make it germane to the current story without requiring one to read any of the other stories.

Because every story is stand-alone, they don’t have to be read in any order. However, reading them in the sequence of being written will enable the reader to make most of the “connections” no matter how subtle they are. (“The Journey” is the only one that doesn’t appear tie in to the others – unless I missed something.)

What impresses me the most is how the author managed to tell five different stories, yet have them tie together in so many subtle ways. How was he able to keep track of everything? And, bless his heart, he doesn’t introduce too many characters to keep track of (I hate getting most of the way through a novel only to wonder “who’s Fred?” when he shows up long after being forgotten by myself).

The only “negative?” comment I might make is that the protagonists exercise “wisdom” way beyond their age when dealing with others. And, that’s not really a negative, but a wish that I might have shown such wisdom at that age instead of “acquiring” it the hard way.
The Show is my least favorite of Heldt's books, but still a very worthy tale and a good read, and another very 'sweet' tale of high minded very moral people.
