And After Until the End of the World Book 2 eBook Sarah Lyons Fleming
Cassie and her group had made it to the safe zone in Vermont and back into the arms of her former fiance, who runs the farm. Job responsibility is shared and rotated...security, adding to the farm's defenses, night guard duty, scavenging runs, cooking, planting, killing and burning zombies, canning, chopping wood for stoves...everybody looking toward a new life in the future. Cassie and some of the other characters have a quick wit and some of the responses between them made me laugh throughout the story. The zombies are moving northeast and coming up from South America through the Panama Canal. Safe zones are falling all through the country as these pods of walking dead, numbering in the tens of thousands, devour everyone in their path. Readers meet other characters from safe zones that work in concert with Adrian's farm, trading food, service and other supplies among themselves. One camp, inadvertently, allowed an infected newcomer inside without a visual inspection. When he turned later that first night, the rampage he created resulted in most of the inhabitants getting killed. The northern most camp in Quebec was pretty much self sufficient and enjoyed beautiful scenery and swims within the small adjoining lake.
Life continued and most everyday was routine. With a new moat dug around the compound, Adrian's settlement were able to relax a little - trapping the invaders in the ditch and then dispatching them every morning after breakfast. However, the nightly amounts are growing and now up to one hundred or more a night. They inhabitants were also making "bug out" plans in the event of having to suddenly leave this new home; their final destination being Alaska - the safe zone there was thriving and everyone was invited to join them. Fire drills continued and everyone was confident that an evacuation would prove to be full proof.
Precautions were in place to monitor the surrounding land so there were no surprises. However, sometimes love interests interfere with common sense and the planned things, like checking the countryside from the lookout tower, are overlooked. When the next planned check was to take place in mid-afternoon, it was too late. The tidal wave of walking dead had reached them and it was time to run for their lives.
I loved the first book and novella. enjoying a "feel good" temperament afterwards. However, after "And After", I found myself angry and depressed. Character that I became fond of during these three installments were killed off by the author to keep it real. I still gave the story 5 stars as I was sucked in and couldn't put the story down. I'm left thinking, now what?
Today, I'm over my fit and looking forward to beginning the final book in the series. Well done Sarah Lyons Fleming! You've managed to keep me hooked and I can't wait to see what happens next.

And After Until the End of the World Book 2 eBook Sarah Lyons Fleming Reviews
Since it wouldn't make sense to read a single book from the series without reading the others, this review is about the seris as a whole. I was pleasantly surprised by this story. I'm usually more into the action hero type zombie thrillers, and this is not your typical "the zombie apocalypse started today - luckily I'm an ex special ops soldier with unfailing marksmanship and unlimited access to exotic weaponry" zombie tale. The actual zombie action is sparse in the first book, honestly. It picks up toward the end of the second book and into the third. When there are zombie encounters, the action is typically brief, but intense. Overall, I still enjoyed this series a lot. Fleming develops extremely relatable characters and does a great job of imagining the loss and sorrow that would almost certainly be part and parcel of an apocalyptic scenario for any of us (unless, of course, you're an ex special ops soldier with unfailing marksmanship and unlimited access to exotic weaponry). There were several times when I laughed out loud and even more times when I shed tears in sympathy for the characters. As far as zombie fiction goes, this is probably a much more realistic representation of the challenges and tragedies an apocolyptic sitation would bring. It was engaging and entertaining. Well done.
I always approach a second book with some trepidation. Did the author agonize over it they way they did the first? Did they preserve the feeling, the ambiance, the atmosphere you loved from the first?
In this case the answer is "yes." But there are zombies. Relentless, hungry, godawful zombies that tear and rend. And those have consequences, horrible yet inevitable. Humanity is teetering on the brink of extinction, so the question of whether survivors can maintain anything, themselves, their friends, lovers and sanity remains in doubt throughout. The thin light of hope trembles in gusts of fate and folly, but will it survive? Read on and find out.
A fairly well written apocalyptic novel set (as usual) in the USA. Characters were generally well developed if sometimes a little cliched. The book describes the beginning of a zombie apocalypse well with enough human errors and characters that range the spectrum to make it believable.
A standard plot, weak secondary characters and a little too 'love is the answer' for me made me forego four stars but still a good escapist read.
I do wish, however, that American authors could realise that the world doesn't end at the USA's borders The survivors in northern Vermont are in touch with other survivors as far away as Colorado but there isn't a single mention of any contact with Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto all of which are much closer. Do Americans think Canadians wouldn't also have radios?
And After is a good novel. This being the second part of the trilogy, I didn't know what to expect. This is a great expansion on the story. It tells something very original. This is not just a retread of the first book. Nor is it just the characters going from one zombie attack, to the next. The author does a great job of not inducing a sense of Déjà Vu. She keeps new plot threads moving through the entire book. Also everything has a set up. Nothing is just random here.
My biggest problem, and the reason I took a star off, is because of two characters who I just don't find believable. Bits and Adrian feel like bad YA characters. One note and just kind of annoying. This is a very odd problem, because everyone else is so three dimensional.
I am excited to read book three. As it stands right now, this is my favorite zombie series I have read yet.
