I have seen some people talk about this book on Goodreads and other review sites and give not very favorable reviews. They have described it as dense and difficult to read, the beginning in particular giving people lots of trouble. When I read the book, I immediately realized what the problem for those readers was, and perhaps how this book was improperly labeled. This series, The Sunsurge Quartet, is intended as a sequel series to David Hair's previous work, The Moontide Quartet. The problems the readers I discussed had--the complexity of the world with little direct explanation, the magic system, the barrage of names and implied past events--all stem from a single thing: this is not a first book. To call Empress of the Fall book one of The Sunsurge Quartet is really only partially true; in reality, its more The Moontide Quartet book five. Viewed from this light and with this prior understanding and experience with the story, the book takes on a whole other aspect. The relationships and complex political and religious upheavals at the end of the previous series come to a head in this story, presenting us with the repercussions we knew had to be comping following the close of The Ascendant's Rite. New main characters are introduced that were either not present in the previous work or were only tangential to the main conflict, and they give a fresh interesting viewpoint from which to experience this story.

This is a great book, but I say again, this is not an introductory novel. More so than Mage's Blood (book one of The Moontide Quartet) there is an expectation of the reader to pick up and go that is very difficult to surmount without the prior knowledge from the previous series. That said, if you have read the previous series, I feel you cannot go wrong with this book and I am extremely excited to see where the story goes in the upcoming sequel, The Prince of the Spear. If you have not read the previous series, I definitely recommend taking up Mage's Blood and giving it a try--these books are complex and at times spread themselves a little thin among the vast cast of characters, but David Hair carries it well and has proven capable of giving grand, exciting conclusions to both the overall plot and the characters themselves.

Great read and very enjoyable. Fully recommend this book and look forward to the next in series.

One of the best Fantasy books that I have read in 2016/17!
A action packed adventure with unpredictable twists and turns in events that never leave a dull moment.
A good start to a new series. I was hoping for a few more.of the old characters from last series to be in this one but I like the new ones. Im ready for the next one!
Great stoey to continue from previous series, would recommend to anyone who loves fantasy and or great characters in the story
The Moontide Quartet was a great set of books, and I must say I am a bit let down by this new series, or at least the first book. There are some interesting characters and it carries on the story of the previous series, but none of these characters are nearly as likable or relatible. The main female protagonist is annoying and shallow, and none of the male leads have any depth to them with one exception. Sadly, the "bad guy" is the only person in this who makes any sense, and he is rarely onscreen.
I love all his books so far. I just want there to be audio book version of this series. ( I have all the last series on audiobook and it is amazing. as long as this one has been out I am surprised we don't have the audio version of it.
Most of the initial reviewers were correct, Sunsurge cannot be fully appreciated unless you read the Moontide Quartet. Blame the publishers, not the author. David Hair has written another engaging story about Urte - a world of two lands -one white and one black-divided by an ocean and magic. This time our heroine was raised in a nunnery! Her entry into Urte 's mainstream is steeped with vengeance, jealously, betrayal, love and hate. If you are an adult fantasy lover, you'll enjoy this tale, it's characters, the politics, and the twists. David Hair's world building is superb and his descriptions of people and their cultures are first rate. This book is ideal for juniors or seniors in high school, and adults. This is not a story for tweens or younger teens.. This book contains sex and graphic violence. In some sections women, the poor and blacks are abused and portrayed as stupid and unclean. There are references to homosexuality. While such is the reality of life, it's too much for tweens or the meek. I look forward to David Hair's next installment. After reading Queen of the Fall, you will too. Sunsurge is a great adult read!
