The InBetween Hour Barbara Claypole White 9780778314752 Books

Reading this book was an emotional experience. At once, this book is heavily laden with grief, redemption, loss and hope. I appreciated that the author took the time to really introduce the backgrounds of her characters and let the reader get to know them.

Both main characters were well thought out and explored, although I felt closer to the male character in this case rather than the female. I found myself in an interesting crux at times, where I wanted to grab a character and shake them, hoping they would go a bit different direction or choose a different outcome than they did.

This is an intense story that you will no doubt become very emotionally invested in, and is not the kind of book I would recommend if you are currently struggling with your own loss. Still, it was written well and has a lot of passages that made me stop and consider life and the various situations we can find ourselves in.

In the end, I was impressed by the writing and the direction things went as the story was resolved. I would recommend this book to those who like more intense, deep stories.

The InBetween Hour Barbara Claypole White 9780778314752 Books Reviews

The author stated that she hoped the reader would, "...find this book to be an uplifting a story of redemption and community, a story that reveals light in the darkness of grief & illness."
This certainly describes my experience with this writing!
What a wonderful story of love and its pain! The characters are so rich and real that I want to escape into their world and give them each a hug. The ending was worth waiting for! I am now moving on to the next Barbara Claypole White novel.
Barbara Claypole White may be my new favorite author. I loved this book even more than I loved The Perfect Son. Touching on so many points- suicide, mental health, parenting, loss, aging, dementia and love. It's hard to imagine one story touching all those points and doing it well but Barbara does it. The characters are real, well developed and connect in surprising ways. Read this book, you won't be disappointed.
I fell in love with Barbara Claypole White's debut novel The Unfinished Garden and was beyond excited to get my hands on a copy of The In-Between Hour. As expected, I could not put it down! Her second novel proved to be equally captivating, wonderfully written, poignantly rich, and beautifully crafted. Claypole White has a way of capturing reality in its most truthful state. She never shies away from exploring the tough bits of life, which makes her stories heartbreaking, joyful, thrilling, and relatable. In fact, I’d say that is Claypole White’s strong suit – she dives head-first into life messy, complicated, and mesmerizingly beautiful. Bravo! The reader sees the human experience in its rawest form; pain, pleasure, anxiety, peace, grief, redemption, depression, and love are intricately interwoven into the stories of her characters. In The In-Between Hour, I particularly appreciated her exploration of heritage and one’s ties to history, tradition, place, and family. I enjoyed getting lost in the woods of Occoneechee Mountain, as her descriptions of flora, fauna, and nature are breathtaking and masterful. I cannot more highly recommend The In-Between Hour and The Unfinished Garden!
White consistently creates characters I can relate to. We see their damage and we see their potential and their beauty. My inclination is to now describe the characters (writer/rock climber; country vet, etc.) but truly these people are not defined by their jobs or activities, but by their relationships to one another and to people in the past.

The description of this novel that I read started out with a man forced to pretend his dead son was alive. I read no farther, thinking, "What a stupid premise", but came back to this novel because I loved White's other books. The premise makes sense within the warless of this novel and does not feel at all contrived. Somehow White keeps me reading despite not having great complexity of plot or typical page-turning prose. She makes me care about these people and exposes the reader to their thoughts and fears.

I recommend this books, but I can't say it is her best. She bogs down in the thoughts of the characters at times, until my eyes started to skip ahead. Some pages feel repetitious, in need of more editing. Yet in the end I enjoyed the book because the strengths of the writing clearly outweighed the parts I was less fond of.
I’m conflicted. I wanted to like this one more than I did. I’ve read a number of her books and enjoyed them. But I also feel four stars does Barbara Claypole White an injustice. She really bares her soul with discussion of mental illness and grief and the human condition and it is gripping! You can feel the anguish and see how different people deal with both.
I’m cool with the budding romance between the two main characters. But in the depths of this book, weird things were tossed in that didn’t fit. Will getting an erection. The word “babe” too many times. And, while I grew up listening to WV dialect, NC can’t be too different. Jake’s use of ‘were’ instead of ‘was’ was too blatant. It was distracting.
I’d still recommend this book for the sheer human-ness of most of it.
The In-Between Hour is a beautifully haunting book about love, friendship, and family. Will and Hannah are both damaged; he has lost his young son and her son is dealing with demons of his own. One guarantee when you are reading a book by Barbara Claypole White; you will not only get a fascinating story, you will get multi-layered characters who will take up space in your heart. This story is poignant, heart-warming, and emotional; the setting is beautiful and adds another layer to this story.
